Eight years of no political leadership to combat right-wing extremism has been dramatically exposed in just three days as deeply disturbing media reports reveal the reach of extreme right-wing groups in Australia and their plans to attack and threaten our democracy. The lack of leadership has left Australia years behind our allies in fighting this new and dangerous terrorist threat. As Australians faced the fact that the Christchurch terrorist was one of our own, Mr Morrison promised much: Hate, blame and contempt are the staples of tribalism, it is consuming modern debate, egged on by an appetite for conflict as entertainment, not so different from the primitive appetites of the colosseum days, with a similar corrosive impact on the fabric of our society. Scott Morrison, 18 March 2019 However, we know words come easily to Mr Morrison. Action does not. Since then, Labor has been urging the Morrison Government to take the threat of right-wing extremism seriously and has called for the Government to use its proscription powers to list certain right-wing extremist groups as terrorist organisations, in particular, the National Socialist Network. Labor welcomes the comments by Senator James Paterson, Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, supporting calls for the National Socialist Network to be proscribed. Labor has pointed out that if the Morrison Government can prioritise proscribing Jama'at Mujahideen Bangladesh — a group that has no known links to Australia — it beggars belief that they can’t get to proscribing violent right-wing extremist groups active in Australia. Yet active groups like the National Socialist Network are still not listed. Worse still, Mr Morrison has stood by and watched as his own Members of Parliament and Senators have embarked on a campaign of COVID-19 disinformation - disinformation that is deliberately used by right-wing extremist groups who want to create division and disunity in Australia. It’s frightening that Mr Morrison is still doing business with those who give credibility to conspiracy. It is time for the Prime Minister to clearly condemn right-wing extremism and those in his own Government who give comfort and support to far-right conspiracies and views.
